BIOGRAPHY | Actress, singer, director, writer, composer, producer, activist, and philanthropist, Barbra Streisand has always been an advocate of women’s issues and has been outspoken on issues of gender inequality throughout her career. She was stunned to learn that gender inequality still exists in the medical sciences when it comes to research and treatment of heart disease, given that heart disease is the number one killer of women in our country, more than all cancers combined. Today women’s heart disease has become an epidemic, killing more women than men. Barbra’s focus has been on education, research and treatment of this serious women’s health issue. In 2008, she endowed a research and education program at the Women’s Heart Center at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The research at the Women's Heart Center is revolutionary. Few institutions in the country are so focused on how heart disease presents itself differently in women. The Center is changing how women with heart disease are diagnosed and treated, and their work is helping women everywhere. Cedars Sinai Medical Center is currently in the process of building a world class Center for this important work and Barbra continues to support and champion their fundraising efforts.
