CHRISTY TURLINGTON BURNS

PHILANTHROPIST. GLOBAL MATERNAL HEALTH ADVOCATE. MOTHER. MODEL.

“Women are unique with built‐in compassion and empathy which make us good at understanding people and giving of ourselves.”
– Christy Turlington Burns

Philanthropy and service have long been a part of Christy's personal and professional mission to make a lasting impact on the world. In 2005, Christy became an advocate for maternal health for both CARE and (RED). In 2010, she debuted her documentary film, NO WOMAN, NO CRY, about the global state of maternal health, at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City and on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) on Mother's Day 2011. Concurrent with the debut of her documentary, Christy launched "Every Mother Counts", an advocacy and mobilization campaign to increase education and support for maternal mortality reduction globally.

Christy spends much of her time advocating on behalf of mother’s around the world. As the daughter of a Central American mother, Christy’s dedication to philanthropy began when she was compelled to support the efforts to rebuild post-war El Salvador in the 1990s. Recently, Christy launched "Every Mother Counts,” an advocacy and mobilization campaign to increase education and support for maternal and child health, and produced and directed the documentary film, "No Woman, No Cry.” "Being pregnant, compounded with all that I learned, triggered in me a sense of responsibility,” she says. "I knew that more could be done to elevate awareness around this issue and felt that through the medium of film, I would be able to share women’s stories from around the world that could rally some activism.” Christy also is a Maternal Health Advocate for the humanitarian organization, CARE, and an ambassador for (RED), a global fund that invests in HIV/AIDS programs in Africa.
